With all the energy in the Democratic Party – we are setting records for interest and involvement – this is the time to consider running for office. 2017 is especially the year to think about local involvement. There are a number of municipal and school board offices on the 2017 ballot, including Conover, Hickory, Maiden and Newton city councilors, Hickory and Maiden mayors, and school board members for Hickory and Newton-Conover schools.

The complete list of open offices is on the Catawba County Board of Elections website at:

The filing period for municipal offices opens on July 7, while the school board filing period starts on Aug. 18.

The NC Democratic Party has a Pipeline Project for people interested in running for office at all levels. The project includes highly informative conference calls. Learn more at:

Here in Catawba County we have our own candidate recruitment effort. We’ve been holding candidate information sessions for people considering a run. These sessions are to tell you what the different positions require – What does a city council member do? And, what does it takes to run for office – including time, money, and team.

Our next session is July 18, 6 pm, at our 1612 Tate Blvd. SE, Hickory, office. July 18 is still in time to file for municipal office – the filing period closes 12 noon on July 21. We’re lining up several speakers – those who have run and some who have won. There will be lots of time for Q & A.

Think about public service – for yourself or someone you know. It is really gratifying, as our speakers will tell you, to do work that matters. And, rest assured, there will be a team to support you. When Tracey Stracener ran for Catawba County School Board last year her fellow members of Democratic Women of Catawba County fielded a campaign team for her. Many hands do make for good work.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
