About Jonathan Mott

The CCDP Summer Internship honors the legacy of Jonathan Mott, a passionate advocate for civil rights, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, and women's rights. For more than 20 years, he wrote a widely followed daily blog under the name "Zandar," where he championed progressive causes and Democratic candidates. He was deeply engaged in politics, celebrating Barack Obama's presidency and supporting Democratic campaigns at all levels. Jon would be proud to know that this internship, created in his memory, will help strengthen the Democratic Party in his hometown and advance the values he held dear.

Jon was adopted at three days old in Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved with his family to Hickory, NC, at age two. A gifted student, he attended Hickory City Schools, the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP), and the NC School of Science and Math before enrolling at UNC-Asheville. Though he spent his career in banking and finance tech support, his lifelong passion was political activism. As the biological child of a white mother and an African-American father, adopted by white adoptive parents, Jon became deeping passionate and committed to creating a more equitable society.

Beyond his advocacy, Jon was funny, insightful, and brilliant, but most of all, a loving and beloved son and brother. He passed away in his sleep at age 49 due to cardiac issues, but his voice and vision live on. This internship program ensures that his dedication to democracy and progressive values continues to inspire future generations in his hometown and beyond.
