The candidate filing period for 2021 municipal elections is approaching. This year, Brookford, Catawba, Claremont, Conover, Hickory, Long View, Maiden, and Newton will be electing mayors and/or councilmembers. See the Catawba County Board of Elections website for more information.
Candidate filing for Brookford, Catawba, Claremont, Conover, and Maiden is Friday, July 2, at 12 noon through Friday, July 16, at noon. The filing period for Hickory and Long View is Monday, July 26 at noon through Friday, Aug. 13 at noon.
Nicole Jacobs, chair of the candidate recruitment committee, recommends that anyone who is not an incumbent running for re-election, reach out to her before filing. “We’re here to support and help train Democrats in municipal races.” Jacobs notes that it’s in municipal races where Democrats in western North Carolina have had the most success. Also, let Jacobs know if you know anyone who may be interested in running for a municipal office. Her email is: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Seats on the school boards for Hickory Public Schools and Newton-Conover City Schools are also on the ballot in November. That filing period opens on Aug. 23 at noon and closes on Sept. 3 at noon.
